In the Olympics, pole vaulters run with a long pole. They hold the pole and jump high! They let go of the pole! They go over a high bar! They come down on a MAT so they don't get hurt. The pole vaulter with the highest jump wins! 
奧運有撐竿跳項目，運動員握著長長的竿子快跑，然後撐在地上讓自己跳起來，越過欄杆，落在軟墊上，跳最高的就能獲勝!
In the Netherlands, there's a different way to pole vault. Vaulters jump over a wide canal. A canal is a manmade waterway!
在荷蘭，有種不一樣的撐竿跳！參加比賽的人要跳過寬寬的運河。
Canal vaulters run very fast to a pole. They grab the pole and jump on it! They climb up the pole as fast as they can! The pole goes a little to the other side of the canal.
這些運河撐竿跳運動員要衝向竿子，快速地爬上去，竿子會慢慢向運河的另一側傾斜。
The vaulters let go of the pole! They come down on sand so they don't get hurt. The canal vaulter with the longest jump wins.
這時運動員要放開竿子，落在對岸的沙子上好避免受傷，跳最遠的就獲勝!
A long time ago, farmers there jumped canals all the time. Many farms have canals. Farmers used poles to jump canals. It wasn't for fun. They needed to go to the next field!
荷蘭是低地國家，有很多運河。以前荷蘭的農夫常常需要撐竿跳過河，不是為了好玩，而是為了到農田裡工作。
Now, every year, many people watch the Netherlands' canal jumping contest! Jump far, vaulters!
到了現在，很多荷蘭人每年都會觀賞他們的撐竿跳運河比賽。加油!

Vocabulary
荷蘭的撐竿跳不是看誰跳得高，而是比誰跳得遠。
1. as fast as 一樣快。
That runner, the first one from the left, 那個左邊的第一個選手，
says he can run as fast as a giraffe.說他可以跑得跟長頸鹿一樣快。
That's a fun way of putting it. 這個說法很好玩。
2. contest 比賽。
Here we go! 開始了。
Wow, he really runs fast! 哇，他真的跑很快!
And he won the contest! 他贏了比賽!
3. jump 跳。

4. highest 最高的。
I want to see if any jumper breaks the highest record. 我想看看有沒有選手破最高紀錄。
