There are many days for the new year all over the world. Why? Well, different
cultures use different calendars.
你知道世界新年的日子很不一樣嗎? 因為每一個文化有自己特別的月曆。

Today is New Year's Day on the calendar most countries use. It's solar. It
uses the sun.
大部分的國家都是今天過新年，因為他們用陽曆來算時間。

Now it's month seven on a different calendar. Muslims use this calendar. It's
lunar. It uses the moon. The new year is in June on the calendar that most
countries use. It begins when a new moon comes.
但是對於伊斯蘭教徒而言，現在是陰曆的七月，他們用月亮計算時間，新年是在我們陽曆的六月。

In Taiwan, we say our calendar is lunar. But it's not! It uses the moon AND
the sun! The new year begins when the new moon closest to the first day of
spring comes. It's between January 21st and February 21st on the calendar
most countries use.
那台灣也使用陰曆嗎? 其實我們的農曆，是同時用太陽跟月亮算時間!
新年會在春天第一個新月慶祝，通常在陽曆的1月21日到2月21日之間。

Now it's the Year of the Dragon. Soon it'll be the Year of the Snake!
現在是龍年，但我們很快就要迎接蛇年!

Vocabulary
不同的文化，造成有的國家用陽曆，有的用陰曆。

1) snake 蛇。
Did you know this year is the Year of the Snake? 你可知道今年是蛇年?
I thought it's the Year of the Dragon. 我以為是龍年。

2) January 一月。
Guess I'm still stuck in last year's calendar. 我還卡在去年的月曆呢。
You are always one month behind.你老是落後一個月。
What's next? 之後會怎樣?
Celebrating January in February? 二月時慶祝一月?

3) lunar 月球的。
Well, at least I'm not tracking time with a lunar calendar.
至少我不用陰曆計時。
I like the lunar calendar! 我喜歡陰曆!

4) New Year 新年。
It reminds me of when to eat zongzi or moon cake.
它提醒我哪時候吃粽子或是月餅。
My favorite one is still Lunar New Year's Eve dinner. 我最喜歡的還是年夜飯。

We make a lot of food waste! All the world's food waste in one day can make one billion meals! Wow! 我們每天製造很多廚餘，全世界一天的廚餘量相當於一億份餐點 ! We throw away a lot of food. When it goes to  landfills , it makes gases that make the Earth hotter. 廚餘被丟到垃圾掩埋場，會產生溫室氣體，讓地球的溫度升高。 But in South Korea, people don't throw away food waste. The country recycles 98 percent of it. The Pasta'ay Festival Is About Something Serious   2024.11.14 語音檔連結 The Saisiyat are one of the Indigenous Taiwanese Peoples. Long ago, there were many Saisiyat people. Today, there are around six thousand Saisiyat in Taiwan. 賽夏族是台灣的原住民族，原本人口很多的他們，現在只有大約 6 千人。 But the Saisiyat have saved their traditions.
